“An international firm is looking for a M&A/Funds/B&F lawyer at your PQE level”. Beyond the one-liner often used by recruiters to reel you in, do ensure that you also find out the specific expertise that the Partner may be looking for so as not to make a wasted application. For example, M&A roles with international firms typically focus more on private (compared to public) M&A work and value is placed on matters where you have acted as lead counsel in a cross-border deal managing multiple local counsels. Funds roles often place a higher value on lawyers that have substantial experience representing general partners on Fund Formation work, compared to representing limited partners on investment into funds or representing the fund managers in their downstream investment into portfolio companies. Banking & Finance roles can sometimes require specific Project Finance, Aviation Finance or Shipping Finance expertise, in which case you should clarify if you have sufficient exposure in these areas to be stand a good chance for the role (or if the hiring Partner is very open to meeting candidates who only have a general B&F background).

With a team made up exclusively of experienced lawyers, we are well-attuned to guide you on what are the specific skills and experiences that a hiring Partner is looking out for and how this can be best highlighted in your CV and your interview responses. This can mean the difference between missing out on or securing an interview and an offer. To speak with us, drop us a note at hello@lexmatch.co.
