“If I wait awhile more, will there be more opportunities in the upcoming months?” We commonly get asked that question by lawyers who are not particularly enamoured with the current opportunities, but yet are concerned that a better one may not surface anytime soon. Generally, year-end – especially close to the festive season – is a quieter period (as seen by the few moves last November and December) and hiring activity starts picking up after the turn of the year. This trend tends to be followed more closely by firms whose salary adjustment and bonus payment track the calendar year (as is the case with many US firms), since it is no secret that associates intending to seek greener pastures often hold out till bonus is paid before making their move. On the other hand, many Magic Circle firms follow a May-to-end-April cycle, which means that mid-year may see an uptick in departures (and consequently, vacancies).

However, these are only general trends and hiring is ultimately driven by business needs. With our wide network of contacts, we keep our ears close to the ground and are quickly informed when there is a hiring demand in a particular firm/department.
